How to use the chess clock
Choose a preset or enter a base time and Fischer increment. Start the game, then each player taps their own clock after completing a move. The tap stops that clock, adds the increment, and starts the opponent clock.
- A controls White and L controls Black.
- Space pauses or resumes the running game.
- Swap sides or rotate Black without changing whose turn it is.
What the presets mean
A control such as 3 + 2 gives each player three starting minutes and adds two seconds after every completed move. The small preset list covers common casual formats without creating thin preset pages. You can enter a custom control for chess, Go, board games or classroom turn-taking.
Accuracy and browser limits
Clockfresh calculates the active clock from an absolute timestamp, so the display catches up after a delayed frame or background return. Screen wake lock is requested while a game runs when the browser supports it.
Keep the page or installed web app open. A browser clock is not certified tournament hardware; use an approved physical clock and follow the event rules for rated or critical games.

Clock behavior and time-control terminology were checked against the FIDE Laws of Chess on 22 July 2026. Tournament organizers may set different controls and equipment rules.

Questions
- How does Fischer increment work?
- The chosen increment is added to a player only after that player completes a legal clock press. No increment is awarded if time has already expired.
- Can I use the clock without internet?
- Yes, after this route has been cached by the Clockfresh web app. Test offline access on the device before relying on it.
- Is this an official tournament chess clock?
- No. It is a browser tool for casual play, practice and turn-based games, not certified tournament equipment.
